A Historic Canton Icon
The Chambers family has been in business in Downtown Canton for five generations! Believe it or not Chamberhouse actually started out as a Western Auto. In 1974 Bud and Sylvia Chambers, the fourth generation of Canton business owners, opened the Western Auto in Downtown Canton. By 1983, the store had evolved into a home furnishings and gift store named Chamberhouse. Today, Bud and Sylvia are retired, and their daughter Carla Roach is the proud operator of Chamberhouse.
Downtown Canton has a rich history, and the current location of Chamberhouse is no exception. We know that as early as 1919, the area where Chamberhouse is now was a livery stable and mule barn. In 1927 the stable was remodeled into “The Main Street Garage,” and soon after in 1930 it became a Chevrolet dealership. In 1955, a massive fire that started in the Cantex Manufacturing building destroyed the majority of downtown Canton, including 145 West Main Street. The Main Street Garage was quickly rebuilt, and it reopened in 1956 as a Chevrolet dealership. In the 1970’s the dealership moved to a different location, and 145 West Main Street became a sewing plant called Westvale Manufacturing, which produced children’s clothing. In 1988 the Chambers family purchased the building and expanded their store Chamberhouse into it.
We are proud to be a part of the Canton community. Many of our customers remember coming to Chamberhouse when they were kids back in the 1970’s, and now they bring their own children! And as Canton continues to grow, we love welcoming new people into our shop and into our town.
